Hello,

I recently got 7 Buff Orpingtons. I got them because I had read they were good at foraging for a heavy breed. I was hoping for some ant control in garden. When I first put them outside at 4-5 weeks, I was encouraged because there was some exploratory pecking. Now, at 7 weeks, they completely ignore the ants.
I have 7 eggs in the incubator now for assorted breeds and am looking to do another hatch, but I want to hatch breeds that are going to vigorously go after ants.
Any suggestions?

You might have more success with the chickens eating ants by waiting until they are more mature. There may be better ways to control ants. Guineas seem to have a better reputation for insect control.
