I got straight runs from TSC. 4 out of 6 ended up being boys :barnie

I want to keep one to produce more to make up for my bad luck 🤣

Out of these 4 which would you keep? I am aiming toward #3 but I’m curious what others would choose.

Also, do you think I could sell the others or should I just go ahead and eat them? I’m not looking to make a profit by selling them but I’d like to at least break even so that would have to be around $8 to $10 each to break even.

Update: I ended up keeping #3 and selling #2 to my husband’s aunt. The rest will become food, the other two especially #1 aren’t very nice, so it worked out!

Temperament is most important! Pick one or two who behave well towards humans and flockmates, and who's structurally correct (no obvious flaws).
They are all handsome!
How old are they? Keep two for a while, if possible; your first pick, and a backup.

I'd keep whichever is best behaved with you and the hens.

Try selling them. If no one wants them at your price than they are dinner.

Good point. I’ll do that then. I’ll put em up for sale and if I get no hits I’ll just eat em 😊 either way it’s a win-win.

I’m keeping the rooster only until I get a few girls then he’ll be dinner too unfortunately (unless he ends up being a really cool rooster). I’m getting out of the ā€œcute eggsā€ phase and into the dual-purpose phase and my research tells me EEs are not dual purpose šŸ˜‚

#3 is my first choice and #2 is my second.

I promised my husband’s aunt & one friend that I’d breed them and sell them some girls so they will actually only be here til after that happens. Not planning on keeping them long sadly.

They are 12 weeks old.

So what breed are you going to try? having an adult rooster and adult hens helps raise those cockerels next year!
Mary

I was just going to breed the EE roo with the EE hens I got. I wasn’t going to try to cross breed them.

I already have 3 permanent roosters and am working toward making my flock more dual purpose and will start phasing out the pretty egg layers like the Olive Eggers & Easter Eggers but I got the EEs after I made my final choice of going dual-purpose so I will start that next year.
