I thought we finally had the right answer to this question!
Perdue had it right in saying that the egg color was determined by the breed, but perhaps wasn't specific enough in saying which breeds lay what colors. It seemed like they were just trying to simplify that answer, saying white birds (probably meaning White Leghorns) lay white eggs and generally red birds (like RIR) lay brown eggs.
But did they get their other facts wrong as to the details of egg formation and most importantly for us, which end of the egg comes out first? They sounded awfully knowledgable about hens' egg-making apparatus.
Well this links, say it best. Sometime they are lay blunt end first, other times point end first. Which end first the most ????
Two video, different hens. One x-ray pic, two egg bound birds I had all point end first.
Nice thread, so many views. So far the videos are the best proof.
...I can just picture you out there with the calipers on a chickens back to check if she's overweight and saying"time to diet so you don't have problems laying eggs"
Sorry, I just had to say that, but seriously I also say it's the large end first with a healthy chicken.
