Which feed looks better for peafowl of these two?

First feed:

wheat, maize, soy feed (produced from genetically modified soya), wheat gluten feed, calcium carbonate, rape seed feed, rice bran, sunflower seed feed, maize gluten feed, wheat bran, linseed, monocalcium phosphate, soya bean oil, palm oil, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate

Both of these feeds listed in Versle Laga(Belgium company) as pheasant and ratites laying feed, i have tried the first feed before, but never tried the second one, i'm thinking the second one could be better since the soy isn't in the first ingredients, and the protein level is a little higher.

I would think the second one also. Legg told me that he thought that 20% protein might be 'to hot', so the 17% might be high enough. The calcium is a bit lower, not much, and that relates better to the calcium requirements in the article on the UPA that calls for 1 1/2%.

Less soy might be a plus, but then I am not one that is concerned about GMO. I'll leave that to the wack jobs and the conspiracy nuts.

I agree that I would use the second feed option. I am actually one that would push for soy-free feed, although getting it is expensive to have it shipped freight with all of my birds. However, some of my pheasants are off soy.

The one book I have on peafowl says they need at least 20% protein. I think the diet I have my peafowl on is really good. 22% Protein, Oyster shells during laying season and when my male is getting done molting and soon growing in new feathers. Though the problem that you can get with too low of protein is you can have peachicks just give up since they don't have enough energy to develop far enough to be able to hatch out and survive. Or you can be more prone to curly toes too with too low of protein

Anyway, most of my pens are small so i think 20% protein is too much for them, plus its hot here most of the year, the only thing i really want to add to my feed is kelp meal, Josh wrote on his site that he put kelp in the feed and its good for peafowls and it will show the real yellow color on the spaldings and green birds faces, when my spaldings birds arrive from Josh farm last year they had a nice yellow color on their faces, this year they didn't get even half that color.

The breeders around here add kelp meal to the feed. They do say it helps them and it enhances the yellow coloring on the facial skin. I have used feed with kelp for breeding season but not long term.

Josh also feed soy free dog food perhaps this would be good for your birds, i feed my adult peafowl grain free fish based dog food and they love it,

I gave them dog food free soy few days ago for the first time, most of them didn't touch it, and others only ate a few. Will try again next week.

I go with the Nature Wise meat bird feed. I just like Nutrena company since they have great poultry feed products in my opinion.
