I would like to add a little darker brown color to my egg's in my layer flock, which gender carries the gene or contributes more to egg shell color??. I was thinking of putting my Marans in with my main layer flock to accomplish this, what do you guy's about this??.

I read that the Rooster passes on the egg qualities that he receives from his mother to his daughters. So, your Marans Roo's should help darken your flocks eggs. I hope a gentics pro jumps in here, as I am hoping to do the same thing to my RIR flock. Marans X RIR equals dark brown, eggceptional egg layers.

Al, thinks its the breed as a whole. My breeding the Maran rooster to your hens, the pullets would be more Maran so they should lay darker eggs.
