Which grains are in Scratch?

I bought my first bag of scratch yesterday and poured it into my airtight containers. I was surprised to see how much corn is in there. It was also a disappointment because I have a container of cracked corn too, so I won't be giving that to them anytime soon. So I was debating on buying the supplies/grain to make my own scratch. The bag doesn't list the grains in it. Anyone have a list? Does anyone make thier own and is it cost effective? I only have 5 hens...

i think it depends on what mill it comes from mine has corn wheat and milo,and you only need a hand full or 2 a day for 5 hens i wouldnt mess with trying to mix any if you had to get 50 lbs of 3 or 4 different grains it would take a long time to eat it all,so you would have to store 150-200 lbs for 5 hens

skeeter's right, it isn't really worth it to try to mix your own for only 5 hens. Just the same, mine contains wheat, oats, and corn. I'm not sure if it's the wheat or the oats, but they leave some of the large grains behind.

I mix scratch with maintenance feed or layer feed depending on the time of year and with breeder feed during early spring into summer. I mix it about 50% scratch and 50% maintenance feed this time of year unless I'm wanting eggs to eat, then it's 50% scratch and 50% layer feed........Now in late march (depending on the weather) to middle of April I will start feeding scratch and breeder feed. I will begin by decreasing gradually 50/50 down to about 25% scratch and 75% breeder ration. I also try to feed more greens at this time of year also. It would not be feasible for you to try and mix your own unless you already grow some or most of everything needed in your garden. I'd just buy it at the local feed store.
