Which hen is the most quiet?

My neighbors are not very excited about me getting chickens. There was another neighbor who had a noisy rooster that woke them up early in the morning (4:00 a.m.) They are afraid mine will do the same. I have promised not to get a rooster. If I get one, my brother said he will take him. Because of this I am looking for the most quiet hens that are also friendly that would make good pets? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Sussex are quiet and friendly. Buy from a breeder, tho, not a hatchery, if you want true Sussex traits.

That is some lovely breed type on their Speckled Sussex!
Hum, now their website says they are in Georgia! But the map to their place says they're in San Francisco Bay area. I give up on where they are!!

you can ask to buy started chicks. or maybe the farmer will raise them up and select for you. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Just a thought. If you want to show your Speckleds, you need to buy from a top breeder like Tony or someone who has a top breeder's stock. Because it can take many years to stabilize the color genes in SS so the color is correct. Esp. the ground color and speckling.

Good luck. I think you'll find that your mileage may vary re: a specific breed and it's noise level. I've heard others say that Sussex were very loud. One thing I have found is that females are generally quiet unless they are laying an egg. Then some are very vocal, and others go about their business without any fan fare. I have found that my girls are quieter entering their second laying season than they were when they first started laying. At least when a chicken is loud, she has something to talk about. "I just laid an egg!!!!!" compared to a dog, that just barks all day, or a leaf blower, or a lawn mower, or the teens with their boom boxes in their cars that vibrate the air around you as they go down the street... Noise happens.
