Which hens are the quietest?

Hmmm, my cochin, brahma, EE, and RIR are super quiet my australorp and faverolles are VERY noisy. We have an australorp named Crispy, and she's the smallest of our australorp and she struts around the run making a ton of noise. She puts our roo to shame most days.

I think some of it is individual chicken personality. My NHR hates being left alone and makes an awful noise. My EE is generally sweet and quiet, but also makes a horrendous honking noise, very gutteral. The BR are generally a bit noisier on an ongoing basis, but don't tend to have such awful exclamatory utterances.

I'll have to get an early morning report on them. I'm not an early riser, and my bedroom is on the opposite side of the house.

Thanks for all the feedback. We love our girls, they are very gentle and sweet, and we don't mind their chit chat. I just know from experience that not everyone feel the same.

Just happened upon this post and wanted to add my two cents. I definitely agree with Vermontgal; it's more individual personality as to whether or not they're very verbal.

I have several EEs; some are extremely yakky, others are very quiet. I have a Welsummer that talks NONSTOP - loudly chatting about anything and everything. I've also got two Isa Browns - in different pens - one is very loud and constantly talking, and I'm not sure that I've ever heard the other one, except when laying. Interesting!
