maybe this is a stupid question...but which hen is bigger out of an orpington or a cochin? (i'm talkin' standard breeds) i'm getting a BO and a WC (along with a couple other breeds) in about a week and i was just curious.

I no longer have the orpingtons, but when I did I thought they were about the same size. The orpingtons were taller, but the cochins were wider lol.

A lot depends on where your birds are coming from. If they are coming from a hatchery the size could vary quite a bit as compared to exhibition bred birds. If the birds are from a hatchery I don't know what their size will be. If the birds are exhibition lines I would expect them to be similar in size.

thanks for all the replies. i'm getting them from MPC. from what i've read about cochins (and orpingtons too, for that matter) i understand that they're quiet, docile and friendly. the only one i'm kinda concerned about is my silver cuckoo maran that i'll be getting. i bet she'll be an awesome hen and i look forward to her too, but i do wonder if she'll be "quiet and docile"....of course i know it depends on the individual bird....but thanks for the info on their sizes.

My cochin Rooster is bigger than my orpington roosters, My cochin girls are fluffier than my orp girls, but I think my orps out weight the cochins... My orpingtons are not quiet in any way shape or form... I have 9 total, and all of them are very vocal... My cochin hens are pretty quiet, probally because the orpingtons won't let them get a word in edgewise!

Someone beat me to it! It depends on the origin of the bird - Hatchery quality orpingtons are so small, ordinary, and plain. . . So they're likely to be half the weight and "poofy" size, same with Cochins. . . So it depends.

But otherwise, I believe Orpingtons are supposed to be heavier.

But really, consider this: Brahmas are bigger than both. They're supposed to weigh about 9 pounds for a hen. . . My heaviest hatchery Brahma weighs 5 pounds!!

My poor long lost Brahmas were HUGE! I loved them. Esp the rooster, so gentle the kids would haul him around. For weight and width, probably Brahma is king! Otherwise, I agree with the Orp being the heavy one, the Cochin the "wider" one!

I read white giant hens are supposed to weigh ten pounds and roos 13 as far as cochin and orps I think cochins are heavier the book in front of me (storey's illustrated guide to poultry breeds) says orps should weigh 10 for roos and 8 for hens and cochins should weigh 11 for roos and 8.5 for hens.
