Ok, building another aviary for exotics. Which last longest? for the top.Galvanized chicken wire or POLYETHELENE netting (not nylong)? Anybody try it longterm? I just did one in Poly net for my peacocks, but am also considering the Galvanized chickenwire ...it would take more tying together mundane work, but I could make the shape more to my liking. The nets often aren't the dimensions they give and I might want to make it differing shapes, etc. In the south, occasionally we can get 6-9" blizzards, ice storms etc. I have had 2" netting before...but these birds are smaller and am considering the chickenwire also because it is smaller diameter...

I use the poultry netting. Chicken wire does hold shape better by tends to sag easily if it’s pulled on the top and a long stretch. It will rust faster too. At least in my opinion. The reason I like the poultry netting is because it seems to catch a lot of the leaves and sticky balls From the gum trees and when it snows I noticed less snow gets through the netting. Which is kind of nice. I think either would work it’s just what works better for your situation I guess. Poultry netting is pretty strong and a 5 x 100’ roll I can get for $20 which is nice to

Is there a reason you don’t want to use the nylon netting? Nothing wrong with preferring or not preferring something I was just curious.

Nylon is just 'coated'. Having used Nylon rope, etc it does not last as long. Polypropylene rope (say Ramm electric fence, premier etc.) has about a 30 yr life. Poly last longer as UV is part of it's makeup, not just coated on top. Nylon 5 yrs or so and seems to begin to fall apart. Nylon is cheaper, but I don't want to redo often. Plus UV is on the increase as we have lost part of our magnetic shield. Old UV ratings used to go to 10, now it is 12-15... if you watch the weather...stuff is fading faster ,etc...(and the chinese made stuff is 'garbage' ..Us boomers remember when stuff was better quality for the most part....:0)

I wonder if painting it with Rustoleam (sp) or getting the coated green would make it more protective... or touch it up.(ie; remove birds first ;0)...

Why would you remove the birds. You could have colorful chickens. LOL just kidding. It was just a curiosity question because I like learning. We have been using the nylon for the top part of ours it’s been up for about four years now and we haven’t had any issues with it at all. But had I known what you said before we got it I probably would’ve chose differently also. Are you talking about painting the chicken wire? I could see that helping protect it. I think they make some kind of a epoxy spray so you can epoxy coat the chicken wire. Don’t know how much that stuff costs or if it’s feasible but that would work to

And I agree The chinese made stuff is garbage and this probably won’t last as long as some stuff well. But it helps that we only get full sun half the day where we have the run
