Guinea pigs are an interesting critter.... classified as a herd animal because of their social structure. Cavy or Cuy came from the Andes and were brought to Western civilization by dutch traders. They got their name from the noises they make and they sold for guinea.

In the Andes they were/are raised much like chickens... for food.

Interesting things to note. Just like herd animals their babies are born complete... even down to the squeek. Momma has only two spigots so litters of four often wait in line for dinner..... :lau but no issue because they are born with teeth and can nibble on grasses right away. They can also run as fast as momma.

They are like humans in that they dont produce vitamin C in their bowel so they have to have food that either has it added or foods rich in it like Kale and Broccoli.

They dont chew or dig their main form of defence is running and hiding. I used to keep them in my front yard. With the yard lined with one inch chicken wire.... Then I would lay 6 inch chunks of drainiage pipe about in the yard. When something put them on the alerd you would find them ALL in one pipe.... piggie butt on one end piggie head on the other and three feet of pipe.

They would go into the shrubery to forage... at first I was worried but all I would see was grass stems wiggle wiggle then dissappear down into the shrub as they ate them like spaghetti.

You can keep them in a fenced area with a fence that is one foot high... They love Alfalfa....

Oh and Cavies come from a group of Rodents Cavidae
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caviidae

Which has the largest Rodent species in the world Capybara

And when I decided I didnt want to have them any more I was up to sixty.... Product of not learning how to sex the little ones in time. :lau

But they are a great childrens pet because they dont bite or scratch... I use to set my son down in a childrens wading pool with shavings in the bottom and give him a guinea pig... When it wriggled out of his hands it would just circle him it made for easy retrieval.
