I'm trying to find a medicine that will not affect the eggs and I can't find the info of the other 2 (carnidazole and dimetridazole). I know metronidazole affects the eggs which is why I'm trying to see if the other 2 are good to use if still trying to use the eggs.

Since canker is a protozoan, most any anti-protozoan medicine that treats it may need an egg withdrawal time. In chickens Aqua Zole (metronidazole) and ronidazole can be used. Some use acidified copper sulfate in the water for 3 days a month to help prevent the spread. The feeders and waterers must be sanitized well, and I would separate the chicken from the others. Here is a link for the ronidazole:

What did you find after treating with ronidazole? Did you resume eating eggs? I have been told that after using ronidazole there is a lifetime withdrawal. Then, some say because there have been no studies done to show how long it stays in the system. Anyway, I treated my entire flock and now am not eating the eggs. :( Curious to know what you did. Thanks!

Did you ever find anything out?? I had canker in my flock of 18, treated all with metronidazole and it's been almost a month now, curious if the eggs are safe to eat now

Metronidazole is on the list of drugs where they are prohibited in chickens. However some people use it for treatment of canker. It has been linked to cancer in humans, but Flagyl, the brand name, is legal to use in humans for certain infections. Here is a post about it’s use in chickens—read post 12:

I spoke with two vets who said it would probably be OK to eat the eggs after a couple of months. It’s been a year and a half since I treated my flock. I mostly feed the eggs back to the chickens but I occasionally eat them.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure. I thought I heard that metronidazole is less toxic than ronidazole but maybe someone else on here can help out with that.

Best wishes to you and your girls.
