I have a French black copper Maran and a Barnevelder who are supposed to lay dark eggs. One of them finally laid their first egg today:celebrate Does anyone know which one is more likely to have laid this beautiful dark brown speckled egg? Both have red combs and have been squatting and checking out the nest box.

Do a butt check! Take one of them and look at their vent. There is an article here about checking the vent and i believe it states the vent should be moist and about 4 fingers in width if she laid. www.backyardchickens.com/articles/who-is-laying-and-who-is-not-butt-check.73309/

Definately the Maran. The Barnevelder usually has a lighter dark brown colored egg as seen here below.

Also do you have any laying Welsummer?

Thank you for all the replys. I kindof think it was the Maran because I seen her go into the coop alone for a while today but when she came out she didn't sing the egg song she just ran off and started foraging with the others. I'm not sure I want to do a butt check lol. Those are the only 2 pullets who dont let me hold them. They will eat from my hand but touching them is off limits.
