I'm afraid I have some bad news. While they both appear to be young roos, they are not marans. Cuckoo marans have white legs, not yellow, like these birds do. Unfortunately, this is all too common in hatchery birds since they often cross them with barred rocks out of ignorance and greed. If you are seriously wanting good stock and good egg color my suggestion would be to keep neither. I am not trying to be harsh, I just want to let you know before you get too far into it. If it were me, I would also contact the source to let them know that what they are selling is not a marans. It really frustrates me when I see people get taken advantage of with this breed.
I'm sorry, I swear I saw the reference to them being marans. I must have had it confused with a previous thread I was reading. I guess it has been a longer day than I realized! I also wanted to add that since they are rocks, it is possible that they could be hens. It would be very unusual for them to be that light but certain lines can produce birds like that. I would give them a bit more time and see what comes out of which end!
I m so confused. I have a Rock hen and I had to get rid of the rock roo. If they are rocks they look like hens to me. My roo had spindly feathers on his neck and tall tail feathers that drooped over. And he was was bigger than my hens. If it's the noise that concerns you my hen is really loud.
If they are both roos I only need one. I already have 3 roos as it is. 1 RIR & 2 bantam mixes. If these are roos I will only keep one and get some pullets to go with him.
it isnt the noise that bothers me I just remember that one of them would make a horrible sound usually in the mornings which made me think at least one was a roo but they look the same so I just assumed they both were roos.
