Hi! Most of my flock are 14 month old hens. Recently, I bought straight run blue and black copper marans. I have never bred my hens before, but I would like to try. My hubby says that I can keep only one rooster for now to breed with my Blue Copper Marans Hens (14 mos of age). These two roos are 3 months old. I've been reading some about breeding and the genetics, but I would really love to get some advice. Should I keep the Black or the Blue? Thanks for your input! (posting pics of each roo and the hen)

Since you're just dabbling in breeding, not going for a SOP bird just yet, I'd go much more on temperament than color. The best rooster is the one that's very respectful of you, not underfoot all the time. ANY signs of aggression means he goes!

Well, I was trying to remember. I believe blue x blue gives some splash, black, and blues. Black x blue yields 100% blues. They are evenly temperamented. I'd love to have some splash hens, I think.

Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

Blue x Blue = 25% Black, 50% Blue, 25% Splash

Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

Blue x Blue = 25% Black, 50% Blue, 25% Splash
Thank you, keesmom! That's what I needed to know. I think I'll keep the blue roo. I appreciate everyone's help!! :)
Blessings!
