Yes you probably do, maybe (small chance) even 2. If you dont get one I'd get an Australorp they are very nice, and pretty.Odds are that you have a roo in your chicks right now. It's already decided for you.

I have heard several posts about mean Barred Rock roosters, I also read in a book that said they tend to mean. Black Australorps are also common broodies, I have never had a Australorp that wasn't broody, But one of my BO's is broody so ure not wrong that they are commonly broody. Bos are nice though. I have never seen a BR broody but I have only had 1 BR so what do I know? I would either get a Australorp or a BO. BO and BR hens are incredibly calm though. Idk ir BO roosters are nice. I think Australorps would be a good choiceI would go with the buff orpingtons and barred rocks. The buffs are broody and good mommies. And as I understand, so are the rocks. Of course I'm biased, as all I have are these two breeds. Wonderfully calm chickens.
As for knowing, haha - I am an experienced poultier, more than 7 years..... got some pullet chicks last summer..... had a horrible predator move in and I was down to those 4 chicks..... thinking about getting some more for the winter......thinking about how I missed having a roos.... when one of my pullets crowed..... and then I really looked.

Sometimes with hatchery birds it is not uncommon to have birds of different sizes, but eventually even the blind know, haha, on me.
Yeah ... if these are straight run chicks, you already have your rooster most likely and probably more than you need.I have a black australorp rooster (among quite a few others for my other breeds) and I love him. He's gorgeous, he's a great hen protector, he's not aggressive unless something is messing with the hens.
