White Bobwhite...

Quote:
no more than any other bird does.... (crapping) now eating yes they seem to eat a lot if they are spilling thier feed...if not you notice they dont really eat any huge amount of food compaired to other birds.

i notice that all my quail and young game birds waste feed if overfed. i have started feeding twice a day and have noticed less waste on the ground......

. but yeah my cotournix didnt waste so much i use hanging feeders so that they cant play or scratch in it. i dressed them out at 13-14 ounces cleaned. part of what i did with my a&m's is an old trick i learned back in ffa. i put wheat germ or corn oil in thier food so that they drink more then they eat more and yeah they crap piles but man they were plump and tasty. also i would add a cup of rice bran pellets with their ration. its high in fat and easy to digest. i know they ate more than my bobwhites. im hatching out a new batch of them and plan on breeding them instead of just eating them. but man its gonna be hard. i love stuff a cheddar filled pepper in them and then wrap them in bacon . put some garlic salt on them and yeah its divine esp grilled. all white meat

I'm very interested in your feeding recipe. You should (if you have the time) make an individual post for it and I'd love to put it in my educational post (ofcourse with credit given to you). Looks like im going to be getting some wheat germ (do you think the wheat germ itself instead of oil would be okay?) and rice bran. worth a shot woudl be interesting to see how the suplimentation works on my lines!

Im sure others would love to know too!

I have 14-15 mature roos and the only ones that crow up a storm are the bachelors who don't have any gals they crow all day and all night long but still even so it's nothing like a traffic jam loudness lol. My neighbors guinea fowl and roosters make way more noise

My roos that have a good ratio of hens barely ever crow.

Thanks everyone! And I will be selling eggs and birds maybe later this year...but prob not till next spring.

well my old recipe was something like this ill post the ingredients and their substitutes. i don't know what the availability is for rice bran up there in the north but down here its cheap and ready available because louisana and deep east texas are rice patty heaven. but i will say i used it in ffa and i placed in the top 15 out of 100+ entries 5 out of 6 times. i used it for broilers but i have seen it works for birds in general. now when you use the oil you cant leave it out but for a few hours because it will draw flies and get funky. but if you got for dry mix its ok to just mix a can full in their ration.

corn gluten or in case you cant get it you can use corn meal but dont use corn starch (found out the hard way)

wheat germ oil

corn oil

rice bran pellets

14% or 12% cattle creep pellets

i never really measured the stuff i just sorta eyeballed it. i a coffee can was my measuring cup so the dry stuff i used that for it. the oil i poured in until it was well blended. its a high fat ration abd your birds will be so glossy they shine so wear your sunglasses lol

i dont know if tractor supply carries rice bran because i hate thier feed and dont really know what they carry but if you have a tack shop or a feed store or horse farm nearby a lot ofd them carry it because its mostly used for cattle and horses. but yeah youll have plump giant birds in no time. heres a few pics of the feed bag tags from my brands i use (o'neals out of deridder louisiana and bryant grain out of aledo texas)
