so im debating... i work at the local feed store and we had a bunch of black calls and 4 white calls in, well all of the blacks and blues sold and there are those cute little 4 whites in the bin yet. i have a brooder going with some fresh little broilers in there and i have a few 2 week old bantams. my brooder is rather large and could use a couple little duckies in there but i have a few questions first... (please keep in mind that ive never had ducks before but have always had that interest.)
1. can i put little call ducks in the brooder with my chickies? (the broilers will be moved to the shed with an outdoor run in a few weeks when they out grow the brooder)
2. are call ducks good for pets?
3. good for egg laying?
4. how big are the call ducks going to be?
5. this may sound like an odd question but how much do day old calls sell for?
i know that ducks need un-medicated feed, but are there any other specifics other than fresh water daily and fresh feed?
any other info would be greatly appreciated
THANKS

I think you meant to say you never had ducks

I've seen call ducks go for anywhere from 5-20 dollars each. I believe call ducks are a bantam sized duck, so picture a mallard sized duck or so. Also, remember that ducks, though cute and pretty, are a cleaner's nightmaire. Be prepared for alot of cleaning.

Calls in a feed store! I wish I'd found that around here! I had to drive 45 min to get my snowies!........and I think I found a couple black indies and I'm gonna have to drive an hour and half to get them!

Keep in mind my little calls are my first ducks.......but here's my try at answering your questions

1. can i put little call ducks in the brooder with my chickies? (the broilers will be moved to the shed with an outdoor run in a few weeks when they out grow the brooder)

Mine are with my serama chicks and everyone is doing great

The chicks get really upset when the ducks are out of the brooder!

2. are call ducks good for pets?

From what I've seen yes! They are cute little things and mine, while a little skittish when I try to catch them, they are sweet once I have them out

I've never heard a bad word about calls...besides the typical ducky filthiness

3. good for egg laying?

I dont' think so really...but **shrug**

4. how big are the call ducks going to be?

Adults are around or just under 2 lbs....very small, one of the smallest domestic ducks.....though they can be loud (they were originally bred to attract wild ducks to hunters)

5. this may sound like an odd question but how much do day old calls sell for?

I've seen them 5-25 for pet quality...though unfortunately not many near me....lol Also depends on color and type. My snowies were suppsed to be $8 although I ended up being given a 3rd so they would have been ~$5.30......but I gave her a $20 and told her to keep the change, so they ended up ~$6.60 each

If I get the east indies (technically different from calls...but some people call them calls since they are similar in size) they will be $10 each

i know that ducks need un-medicated feed, but are there any other specifics other than fresh water daily and fresh feed?

Make sure they have water deep enough to submerge their bills up to their nostrils; ducks need to be able to wash their nostrils out.

Be forwarned......ducks are filthy, filthy animals....but so cute and fun!

I raise my calls with chicks too, not problem other than as they get older they make a mess with the waterer in there.

2. are call ducks good for pets?
If pet you mean cuddly and will follow you around all the time, not so much..
but if you mean something that you enjoy watching the antics of..sure

3. good for egg laying?
Mine lay just about every day now...but only lay in the springish months

4. how big are the call ducks going to be?
Id say mine are all around a pound and a half or so...

5. this may sound like an odd question but how much do day old calls sell for? Ive seen 5-25 bucks for young ducklings

thank you all for so much advice!! and thank you bluegrass! talk about a major ooops in typing! ahaha! totally didnt mean to offend anyone if i did. if those little duckies are there in the morning i will get them. i am kind of a neat freak but that could be a good thing when it comes to ducks. but if they are sold thats fine too. we will see what happens. thanks again.
