White Cornish: Building a Quality, Sustainable Flock for Meat and More.....

Right, I guess I should've figured that was fairly common. Absorption crossing isn't new.

And I suppose in desperate situations, say to preserve something rare or endangered, it has its value.

But the phenotype being in line with white cornish doesn't make a white cornish if the genotype includes traits that belong to another breed. You're right, it will be "false". Later when someone tries to breed what they want from it, the hidden traits will come forward, usually in the F2.

That's what I have with half my Bresse - if I wasn't crossing them it wouldn't matter, you'd never even know they weren't authentic. I guess the same with white cornish.
To me, it matters. Especially because I want to know what to expect with crosses.

Yesterday was hatch day for the first group of fertility test eggs set this year.... I set 18 eggs. At 7 days 12 were clear, 2 were blood rings and four showed normal development. The last of those four hatched this morning. One from pen "A" and three from pen "B".... We had talked about recessive / dominate white gene birds earlier. It's commonly held that chicks hatched silver or gray/black are showing recessive gene... yellow chicks dominate gene.... chicks that hatch already white, tend to have Cornish X in their recent heritage.... 2 of the chicks from pen "B" are grayish silver... I really like to see these!

Well the turtle mystery is solved. JK

I moved 10 eggs to the hatcher a few days ago. This morning the last two hatched... Season is going well so far. There are more than 50 still in the incubators. All but 10 have been candled good. Looks as if I may get my brooders full early this year...

Good luck with them.

I've just put my first 40 in the incy today so fingers crossed.

Mine are laying very well at the moment, probably 6 eggs a week each on average.

Sweet! I love this time of year... good luck with your hatch Dave. In a month we'll both be tired of cleaning brooders but it's fun now!

This is the first full on hatch of the year. I just air lifted 20 fluffy new chicks to the brooder. There are 2-3 more pipped and that many more that have not did anything left in the hatcher.... I have 14 already in the shop brooder from the test hatchs. Still quiet a few simmering in the bator too.
Iv been selling a few eggs on eBay the last couple of weeks. I figure if I start at $20 a dozen it may help take some of the stupid out of the price. I mean really. $20 for a dozen eggs is still pretty pricey! So far it seems to be working. The last group sold for $27 I think. The smallest box Iv sent out was 19 eggs....I'm plan to set another 18 or so for me shortly too. It's either sell eggs or eat them.... As long as fertility stays high, I'll try to keep some available......

I dig new chicks as much as 7 year old girl!
