So when I ordered my chicks from McMurray they threw in a White Crested Black Polish (lovingly named "Pom" for the pom-pom like ball of fluff on his head) but they did not say on the receipt what he was. We did some research and discovered what breed he was (are we right?) but we still have no idea if he is a bantam or a standard. By the way he is almost 8 weeks old.

Here are some pictures of him. (Please excuse Pom's pom-pom. It is being treated with Blue Kote and Neosporin after being pecked down to the scalp by his fellow brooder buds.)

Here he is with a Buff Orpington and an Australorp.

Any thoughts?

Standard............................

that's what McMurray gave me as my freebie, and mine is a boy named Batman who is my pet. I had the same thing happen with Batman's crest with it getting pecked to the scalp and I treated it with Blu-Kote but since it was purple they pecked at it even more so i had to remove him and put him in with the ducks. If not they would have kept pecking him. If his crest is getting worse i would suggest separating him from the others until it completely heals (that's what i'm doing now). If you can't separate him then you could do what i got told to do.

Here's the link with the advice

ETA: post number 5 and 7 are where it explains what they did for theirs that they couldn't separate it from the others.

Hope this helps! Pom is beautiful!

Thanks !Shkittles!!

I am keeping him separated from others. I just let him play with them supervised for about an hour a day. Also thanks for the link!

I was hoping that Pom was a standard. When he gets bigger do you think the others will pick on him as much?

Your welcome! I don't know about when he gets older mine right now is 4 months old and once he gets fully healed i'm going to put him back in with the chickens and see if they start pecking again. I hope they won't.

He, he, he, I know! When he was about four weeks old it looks as though he had a mohawk... now he looks like a punk-rocker!!

Looks like my Elvis! He has had his bit of Blu-Kote too! He is the exotic from McMurray too. Mine is so sweet, and I heard the head feathers itch so they don't mind them pulled at. I had bought a bitter spray, which kind of works. I have heard putting some kind of grease or pine tar will stop them. I had another roo that pulled on his top hat but this one died and the problem is better. Here is a month old pic of him. I also thought he is a bantam but he is the same size as the others now, and they are 12 weeks old. I think maybe if there is one culprit maybe moving him instead of the Polish for a few days that upsets the pecking order.
