My two week old white crested duck still can not stand. so far i have needed to hand feed him because he is not able to stand up and reach the food. He just kicks around trying to get up but he cant. i remember reading that the crest is like a mutation or something making the top of the skull have a opening causing the crest on the duck. Causing this breed to be a little slower than normal. im just afraid of one day finding it dead. so i guess my question is will it ever get the hang of standing and then learn how to walk. and has anyone had this problem. and by the way the most its ever walked was about 5 steps before falling to his side (on clean even cement).

It could have a vitamin deficiency. Have you been adding vitamins? However, similar cases have happened to crested ducks and unfortunately many never lead a normal life.

Can you describe how the ducklings legs are when at rest- and how it moves them when it attempts to walk. At 2 weeks old- there is obviously something wrong- but working out if it is a deformity- or a neurological issue will determine if the duckling has any hope of a normal life. At this stage though- it doesnt look good unfortunately.

Disabled animals still can have a good life if the owner has to time and willingness to give them the extra care needed- so its not all bad news for your little one just yet.

No I havnt been feeding him extra vitamins. Do u know which vitamins he needs.
A mix of various vitamins would be best. I believe you can use infant vitamins MINUS Zinc. Also poultry electrolytes can usually be found in your feed store

DFO and Kevs just said what I was going to. Instead I'll welcome you to the BYC. I'll check back for progress reports!

Hi did you take your duck to the shelter or rescue? I got a white crested duckling today from Santa Paula Animal Rescue and he can't walk or stand properly. Trying to find out what the history is. Please let me know!
