White eye discharge

I have begun to believe that hatchery chickens just are not bred for health and long life. Now I have a 9 month old roo EE who suddenly cannot walk. No injury. Shuns water but eats some on his own so far. Had similar illness in hen months ago. Lots of care. Eventually died. Please help if you have any ideas...

It's possible that you could be dealing with Mareks disease. You won't know unless you get a necropsy done by your state vet or poultry college if he doesn't live. Symptoms can include paralysis of one or both legs or wings, wry neck, starving, tumors, and sometimes eye changes leading to blindness in one or both eyes. Sorry about you are dealing with this mystery illness. Make sure that your feed is not moldy, put some poultry vitamins in their water, and make sure the sick one is close to it's food and water.

MPC source for my birds. Told all received Marek's vaccine. Now I've heard that an embryonic vaccine is also necessary. We did send off a hen for a necropsy a month ago. Waiting for results on her, Pearl. She was one too.

Sorry for your loss. It would be nice to post any necropsy results that come back.

I certainly will post necropsy results. This website has been of great help and interest to me. God bless the originators, managers and participants.

TOOK some time to get necropsy report due to clerical errors. Result Avian Infectious Bronchitis. Multitude of symptoms. Now have closed flock. Have lost about 45per cent of 50 birds ! Wish I had me necropsied earlier but then again not much more can be done than we have done. Vet in Palos Verdes Ca., Teresa Micco also suggests MG or Marek's. Tyrosine powder given to all. Have sent yet another bird for necropsy now. Have just lost so many. Recurring we are told and spread like wildfire. However our roo, Rooben had paralyzed legs for 4 wks and is now walking and with his girls. Not mating or crowing but able to get on roost. These birds began dying in first week so I am about to contact my supplier. Been too busy taking care if sick birds to do that. Hand water and feeding, saline in eyes, poultry rx in nostrils, garlic, some acv, some coconut oil, fresh greens yogurt and vitamins. My super food plus green vitamins Dr. Schultzes (stress vit) help in desperate situation like blue comb and lethargy. By the way some have no symptoms and die. Fight the good fight folks. Will post next necropsy report $20by the way now at UC Davis or San Bernadino.

Most necropsies require addition testing for Mareks disease. Did they mention that it might be that?
Infectious bronchitis doesn't sound like it would cause the swollen gunky eyes and paralysis, unless it was also accompanied by something more serious including mycoplasma and Mareks. Infectious bronchitis is the most common respiratory disease with symptoms of sneezing and clear nasal drainage. It can make carriers of a flock for up to a year. Mycoplasma (MG) or Mareks in the flock can make them carriers for life. Will be looking for your next necropsy report.
