Our buff orpington, as of a week ago, began showing signs of what looked like fowl pox. She has bleeding or scabby dark sores and bumps on her face and comb and in several places on her body under the feathers. Yesterday she began to look like she was silently crowing or gasping for air and one of her eyes turned pussy and now is covered with a white film. Her age is around four years old.

Today, when she settles onto the ground, she is having troubling balancing and staying upright. Is there anything we can do to save this girl?

Thanks.

Can you post any pictures? Sometimes with pox, secondary bacterial infections can be common, especially in the eyes. I would clean the eyes with saline, taking care to not disturb pox scabs, but getting the pus out, and applying an eye gel or ointment such as Terramycin, Vetropolycin, or Vetrocyn.

I'm sorry you are going through this with your hen. I've only had chickens for a year so I'm not experienced as some of the other people on this site but depending on her behavior and her getting this bad I would put her down. However if you think she looks like she wants to live then I would put her in an comfy area with food and water and do supportive care.
