White Face Black Spanish

I was originally supposed to buy Jeremy's minorca but had a little trouble getting to Oakland at the time due to some personal issues. I finally told him to go ahead and sell her to someone else, and I'm glad she found a good home.

I finally did get some information on someone in Pine Grove who breeds/sells minorcas, AND I'll be ordering some WFBS hatching eggs from our friend here at Lund Poultry. Everything is coming together and working out. I'm getting everything I want, doo dah, doo dah. Hehehe.

And the SUN IS OUT and I got to take my scoot out for a ride today. It doesn't get much better than that.

I was taking Texas history at South Plains College when I got him. I didn't relize that they came from the same region of Spain, how funny!

It is fitting as they are all Castillian breeds and Hernan Cortes was from the Castille region. Future roosters could be called Pizarro or Orrellana as well. Cortes....the luckiest man in all of known history....such an interesting story. But thats for another thread and another day....haha

I have ordered like 4 dozen eggs from this guy of various breeds, and they all come with detached air cells, irregular air sacs (signs of being old eggs or improperly stored), or were downright infertile. After spending over $90 on eggs from that guy and still not having even a single chick to show for my money and my trouble, I decided to just order chicks from Ideal.

When I asked Terry Lund about the way the most recent batch of eggs was packed (there was nothing to line the bottom & the bottom eggs arrived smashed), he told me he just uses whatever he has available (the box was filled with newspaper shreds--when I ordered from him previously, at least the bottom was lined with super-large bubble wrap and was filled with packing peanuts) and to just be grateful he spent more on shipping than what he charged me AND put in extra eggs. I thought that was exceedingly poor customer service and would not only never buy from him again, I wouldn't recommend him to anyone, either.

For about $20 less than what I spent in 52 non-hatching eggs from Lund, I got 25 healthy WFBS straight-run chicks from Ideal, 15 of which are pullets & 10 cockerels. Sweet!

I would have rather had heritage stock, but when the only breeder you can find ships out old/inferior quality eggs, ya do what you have to. At least now I have the birds, which makes me pretty happy after a $90 failed egg-speriment from Lund.

I just found out about a woman in Kelseyville, CA, who has heritage stock. I'll be acquiring some of those to breed with the better quality birds of my hatchery stock and continue to work on/improve the breed. They are SO hard to find out here on the west coast, so I'd like to promote a renewed interest in this breed, perhaps show some next year at my county fair (yes, I'm an old broad, not a 4H-er), and breed my stock for the best traits in accordance with the SOP.

Bridgett Riddle, a minorca breeder in Newman, also is starting to work on her WFBS stock. Hopefully, this bird will be restored to its former popularity. They're really quite stately and beautiful & can't wait for mine to be fully grown.

Here are my WFBS babies in the brooder. They are hanging out with 5 buckeye chicks I'm temporarily housing for Linda while she's moving.

I am sooooo excited to finally have this breed and am able to work on breeding and promoting them. Of course, I have more than I'm going to need and am going to keep the best of the lot. When they are 8 to 12 weeks, I'm going to start selling off extra cockerels and 2 breeding trios.

I really hope people start noticing what great chickens these are.

I wrote to Jim Bell, whom I found on the HPBAA website as a WFBS preservationist. He has over 180 birds and has been breeding the Spanish for 39 years.

He has offered to send me all the heritage stock WFBS eggs I need for only the cost of shipping, once the cooler months come back around & the eggs won't get cooked in transit in the summer heat! I explained how much I love this breed, how unappreciated they are and that I would like to be part of preserving this breed from extinction.

I'm so excited!! I don't think heritage stock for this breed gets much better than his lines.

Thanks, Jim.
