So through our homeschooling, we hatched chicken eggs. They hatched on October 24th and 25th. The egg supplier mixed all her eggs up so we could all have a mix of different breeds. But now I'm curious what breed they are and when and how we will know the gender. Any help with this would be appreciated! OK, so here are the pictures:

(I'll list them by number so there is a reference to what chicken is being responded to

#4 (sorry about the lack of head in this pic, I wasn't looking at the screen on my camera and accidentally "cut it off")

OK and now some random pics of all of them together:

Another question...is it true that handling these chicks could make my kids sick? I'm being told all different things from tons of different people. I make sure they wash their hands after holding them, but I'm just curious if they could get something from them if they somehow got their fingers in their mouth before they washed up?

OK, thanks for reading this and for any responses!!

I don't know what breeds, but I know that getting chickens has not made me or any of my family sick. So, I would say you are pretty safe there.

They sure are pretty little things.

Congrats! and welcome to BYC!

As long as your kids dont' eat the poop, they should be fine. Just handwashing and general hygeine are fine.

Ok, for the chicks...I am not going to guess on breeds yet, but my bet is for

#1 roo maybe Easter egger
#2 pullet maybe easter egger
#3 pullet maybe australorp
#4 roo maybe easter egger

THANKS for the replies! And thank you also for the welcome

OK, I have another question (I'm VERY new to having chickens and there is SO much to learn about them) but what is a pullet and a roo?

1 - looks like a mix of some sort (not a typical EE tho because it lacks muffs/beard & is straight combed) - roo
2 - another clean faced EE (green legs are a good indicator of a cross breed) - maybe pullet
3 - sumatra (gender unknown, but I would guess pullet)
4 - similar to 1 and probably a roo too based on comb size

A pullet is a young female and a cockerel is a young rooster.

I don't know breeds so, I am waiting to her what your #3 is!!!
I have on just like that black with legs & beak black too!

I was thinking it was a black sex link (I have never had one so, I don't know)

Quote:
Black sex-links don't have black legs (they're either yellow or white), and the pullets will have gold looking hackle feathers. I've never seen a black sex-link roo so I couldn't advise you on that one.

#3 looks like a sumatra.

my sumatra looked kind of like that when she was younger. shes about 15 weeks old now. when she was about the age of yours her legs were still turning black though. mine also had a way longer tail them too(she still has a long tail). i thought she was a roo (shes mean she almost growls--shes ok when you first pick her up but get her mad-an she gets mad quickly and easily-and shell leave bruises on you) for a while but lack of spurs and facial development proved that wrong.
