I am relatively new at chickens. I have 6 chickens that are about 6 months old. My white leg horn has ripped the back of her comb. What do I do for her. She is bleeding.

I read somewhere that chickens are carnivores so I separated her from the rest.

I haven't figured out how to post a picture. I can email you one if you would like.

Well by now the bleeding should have stopped, just keep her seperated until it heals and keep it clean. No need for anti-biotics or anything like that and it should heal within a week. If it ver happens again flour, cornstarch or sugar are all excellent blood-stop powders and sugar actually has anti-biotic properties according to what the old-timers claim.

Thanks for the info. I finally called my vet because I did not know what to do this morning. It did stop and she is doing fine. Acting like nothing happened.

Calling a vet is always a good move when there is something you can't wait for a message board response to answer.

In the future the advice by nnbreeder is good if it happens again.

I find clotting happens pretty quick on the birds and if you like, you could spray some blue kote on it to hide the wound. It also has antifungal antibacterial properities. Good to have around for the little scrapes.

There is a very good thread started about keeping an emergency kit on hand and what to have in it. May need a stickey placed on it if there isn't that info already.
