You have to get the infection out of the foot.. if there's no opening it means you are going to have to cut her foot and get the pus and junk out because it won't heal unless you do it.

There's not much I can do. If the infection is a staph infection, that means that my grandma absolutely cannot be around her. Is there any risk that one of us or the other chickens can get infected?

You would only get a staph infection if you followed poor hygienic practices when dealing with this. If you just wrap the feet it will not do any good. You have to drain and cut out the infection.

Get some betadyne and wash everything on the birds legs with it.
get some rubber gloves
get an exacto knife. wash the knife in betadyne
wrap the chicken in a towel
cut open the foot pad and get the core of infection out.
Wash the chickens legs with betadyne again
wrap the feet up with sterile dressing
wash your arms and throw any clothing you wore into a hot water wash cycle.
change the foot dressing once a day.
They sell Betadyne at theisen's, Tractor supply, orshelns etc...

Then you chicken will heal and be staph free so your grandmother can be around it.

Seriously you can't just do what you want to do. you have to do what is good for the bird. You have many links with pictures provided for you to take care of this. time to put on your Big Girl Panties and get it done!!

Or just give up on the bird?

No, I will not give up on her. Last night I did clean it up and wrap it. The scab is off and I got most of the pussy stuff out. Today, I will try the surgery. It will be very hard considering I can't have help.

I know it stinks and is hard to do on your own.... but you can do it!! Give it a good go. Maybe you can call a friend to hold the bird in a towel. I wrap them up and use a bungee cord around the towel then they don't move much.

Ok, thanks, for the help! The only thing I see as an issue is she is one of the flightiest birds I have. It shall be hard to catch her, but I'll do my best.

I'm getting ready to go out and do the surgery... I don't have betadyne, though. I do have Neosporin and Triple antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin-Neomycin-Polymyxin-B). Could I use that?
