White Leghorn or RI or New Hampshire Red

New Hampshire’s are the best.Rirs have a bad rep and are usually a problem lots of times.

I have about four New Hampshire’s ,had more have had more.I have rooster and he is super friendly.Lets me hold and let him.

They also are very hardy.A bit bossy but are great layers.
Here are mine-

The way that I see it you have a choice.

You can keep a big, quite, dumb, friendly, and poor laying breed of chicken in which case you are helping to fatten up the predators in your neck of the woods.

Or you can keep an alert, cautious, busy, good free ranging hen who lays well.

Whichever you decide on remember that dead hens lay fewer eggs than living hen do but you will have little trouble catching the dead chickens.

Forgot to mention,NHR are great foragers, never have them getting killed.Have had many others though, one being a leghorn.Big birds can be a much better choice escpecially if you have a lot of bird predators.Regardless, predators should be kept off by you.

Silly reply here...I have both. 2 reds, 24 weeks and 4 white legs, 20 weeks old. One red layed 5 days ago and one leg laid 2 days ago. So far the eggs for both are getting larger each time but the reds are a bit larger than the legs. Reds are hardy, robust and friendly. The legs are flighty and noisy as all hell. They also range further which isnt that great. I like them both and think they are neck in neck for better chicken. Legs lay quicker and maybe for longer. Reds are cold in cold. 0 degrees here.

I have RIR and WL. The leghorns are definitely more jumpy and skittish than RIR. I can at least touch my RIR. They both lay huge and many times, double yolk eggs. Both great producers. Neither are real loud compared to the other. It amazes me that the leghorns are so small but lay such large eggs. Either I think would make a good choice.
