White Leghorns

I love white Leghorns. No, they are not cuddly chickens, but I don't hand raise mine, and so don't expect cuddles. I haven't found them to be flightier than any other hen I own. In fact, I have several hatchery EEs that are MUCH freakier.

They are absolutely beautiful egg-laying machines. They have gorgeous soft white feathers that gleam in the sun, they lay 6-7 large white eggs a week, and they eat less than other hens. Win, win, win!

I absolutely adore my almost 3 year old white leghorn, Chickabod. I handled her a lot from the time she was just a few days old, so she likes to cuddle. She is the only leghorn I have and is smaller than all my other girls so she is like my little baby! She lets me pick her up and carry her around whenever I want and fits perfectly right under my arm. If I'm sitting outside in a chair, she always jumps up in my lap. My chickens have a 5ft uncovered fence and she has never tried to fly out of it. She can jump really well for treats, though!

In the wintertime when I sit outside with my chickens, she will hop up on my lap and I wrap her in my scarf and cuddle :)

I'm very partial to White Leghorns, since that is the first chickens we ever owned. Our three remaining hens, the Powderpuff girls, are 3 yrs old and have a very large rooster keeping them company now. Ours are not any flightier than our others and usually real good egg layers.

They are pretty, aren't they?

There is something so neat and industrious about a flock of White Leghorns. They are hard working, no nonsense girls.

I wish they were easier to sell though. I can move ten sex-links for every Leghorn at the swaps. It's too bad because they'll lay more eggs on less feed than any other breed I know of.

Devora - cool picture!

I have 7/8 week old White Leg Horns and yup, they are super flighty! I'm OK with it.

Next year I'd like to introduce some other breeds to see differences between them.

I wish I had more Leghorns! Too bad you aren't nearby.:/
