leghorns a pretty skittish birds

but be carefull they are very flighty and will fly over a 8 foot fence easily

oh and because they are skittish they dont like handling or petting and will run and fly like a bat out of hell

i know even my hybrid white star [leghorn dad] is the same

I think so I just ordered ten as they are great white egg layers and dual purpose as they do get very large and meaty .. Well the Roos dont lay eggs lol But I think the breed is !

Corinnep, I think you are mistaking breeds. The leghorns stay pretty small and slender. I have two that are a year old now. I think the flightyness depends on where you get them from. I never really socialized with my birds but they will sit with you all day if you let them. Great egg layers, never disappointed.

I am an idiot ! and Tired I forgot the reason we ordered the white leg horns was because my husband prefers white Eggs. We have recently added a bunch of young chicks that I am unfamiliar with and have a new coop almost completed.. You are so Right .. Good productions and white eggs.. mixing with two other new breeds we added in my brain .. thanks for kicking my brain it needed it !

This would depend entirely on what you define as a "good breed."

I have had many roosters of many different breeds including White Leghorns. They do fly well so if you need to keep it confined you're going to have to work at it. On the other hand because they fly well they are less likely to be taken by ground predators. My Leghorn boys take their job of servicing and looking out for their ladies seriously but they are only roosters. They're not going to be able to fight off a large dog or coyote though they may well sacrifice themselves trying to save their flock. I've got three Leghorn roosters right now and have had many others in the past and never a human aggressive one in the lot, but then with the exception of one Dark Cornish boy (who was quickly cured) I haven't had a human aggressive rooster for years now.

If you want to breed and you have other Leghorns then he's good. If you want to improve the production of an otherwise mixed bag of layers and don't mind losing a bit of shell color he's good. If you need to keep him in a confined area that doesn't have a top over it then he's not what you want.
