I'm new to chickens all together - so I didn't know what breed would suit us best. But knew that my grandparents always liked the Rhode Island Reds. Then I found some cheap hybrids - White Rock x Rhode Island Red. Those are what I ordered and will be getting in June.

Does anyone have or know much about this hybrid breed ? Pros and Cons ?
Details please ...

A cross between a Rhode Island Red male and silver factor White Rock female produces brown sex-link chicks. The chicks can be separated by sex at the time of hatching since the females are primarily red and the males are primarily white. That is one major advantage of that cross, the ability to tell from the time of hatch which are girls and which are boys. They tend to produce very good numbers of brown eggs but I think I read somewhere that they stop laying at an earlier age than other layers who aren't sex-linked. I'm not certain on that though.

the cross between a rir rooster and a white rock hen produces what is called a red star or red sex link you can google it. They are suppose to be good layers but I don't know but I do know they are sex linked I hatched some a couple of weeks ago the males are white like the rock and the hens are red.

They're also usually super sweet and great pets. Here's my Ella

According to Ideal:

Red Sex Links are a breed cross using Rhode Island Red males and Delaware females.

Gold Sex Links are a breed cross using Rhode Island Red males and Rhode Island White females.

well ideal says that they are called brown sex link either way they are suppose to be good layers

The names of sex links vary according to who's selling them as do the breeds used to make them.

she's a darling 5 year old. She's never had a sick day and still lays quite well despite their rep for slacking off after 2 years.

Well now I need some of those. The more I learn about different breeds the more I want them. All of them I need at least 1 of everything.
