White Rocks

I have 3 free roaming White Rock Hens who are 4 1/2 mths old. They haven't started laying eggs yet. Can anyone tell me what their experience is with White Rock Hens? A friend told me that his neighbor said they weren't good egg layers.

I have Barred Rocks and they lay 3 out of 4 days which is pretty good.

I was getting 4/5 of 7 days on my one. I have another who should start laying shortly, or maybe that was her first egg yesterday...... we'll see

Around what age should this breed start laying?

Plymouth Rocks are a heritage breed and lay between 22 and 28 weeks.

But, if they free roam all day, are you sure they'll come back to the coop to lay their eggs?

Mine did from day one. I have an occasional egg laid in a dust bath hole but then go right back to laying in the coop.

Yes, the White Plymouth Rock is venerable breed. but there are incredibly few true bred, heritage rocks out there. Very hard to find and incredibly wonderful to actually have to some. 99% of the Plymouth Rocks, of most of the popular varieties, Barred, White, etc, are hatchery stock. So, while the breed may be heritage, the vast majority of the birds available from hatcheries will fall quite short of the standard for the breed. Just saying. If you can find some true bred White Plymouth Rocks, do let me know. I'd climb a rock wall, even at my age, to get some.

I thought I read a thread on BYC that had people with true bred rocks. I will see if I can find it tomorrow. I am tired tonight. I was thinking of obtaining and breading true Partridge Rocks.

my white rock lays a brown egg every single day. she is a great layer. she started around 20 weeks i think. she is also very gentle and we call her our 'dog' instead of our chicken. the rest are just chickens, but she has a name.
