White Silkie Hatch - January 7 - BAD news!

Well, I went ahead and candled all my eggs tonight. BAD NEWS. 19 of the 21 eggs are clear with moving air cells. The other 2 are very different, as you can easily see the vein network.

This is very disappointing. It seems my luck of hatching continues. I'll probably end up with one lone chick like I did last time with my Welsummers.

Don't give up all hope. It is probably very disapointing for you, but try to stay positive. Please!!!

Well for my day 13 report, it is slightly better than before. I candled again last night and decided to remove the eggs that were definitely not doing anything. This is my first time with silkie eggs, so white eggs are not something I'm used to candling. White eggs are so much easier to see inside though. Wow.

Anyway, I previously thought I just had 2 good eggs. I was surprised to see that there was another egg developing well. So of my 21 eggs, I have 3 now that have a good blood vessel network. Also I saw movement in all three last night.

The other 18 eggs are very obvious in their condition. Whenever you move the egg, the air cell moves and you can see the fluid moving wherever you turn it. Each of these eggs come up clear, so there really isn't any doubt about them.

I feel a little more positive about the hatch right now. Even though at the very best, I'll get a 14.2% hatch. That sure sounds a lot better to me than a 9.5% hatch. It's hard to belive that they are due a week from tomorrow. Time flies!!

I am due the 8th w/my first white silkie batch. I have 7, candled last night and have 2 completely clear. 3 that are dark massed, and 2 that are for sure moving with vein networks. Praying I get at least 2!

Sorry to hear about the low number that are fertile. Most people only count the ones that started to grow so if 3 are fertile then that is where they would start counting for thier hatch percent. Though if you are trying to figure hatch rates for mailed eggs then I guess you would start at how many you recieved. I also candled again and out of my 18 eggs I had to toss 6 so down to 12. Still pretty good number. All the Buff and white eggs are growing but none of the black or blue so I don't think they were fertile. It would be hard for the PO to scramble all of 2 colors of eggs and none of 2 other colors wouldn't it. So 1 week to go, 12 growing great good luck with your 3. Good luck to everyone else watching this thread and hatching on the 7th.

Sorry to hear about your blue and black eggs. That is odd about all the blue and black being no good but the others being fine. That would make me question the fertility also. I don't really know if the 18 eggs I tossed were fertile or not. If they were fertile and treated too bad in transit, they wouldn't develop. That wouldn't be the fault of the seller though. Whether it's a matter of infertility or them being treated bad during shipping, it is still upsetting to have to toss so many out.

Good luck to you also for your hatch. Hopefully we will all have some good pics to post next week!!

I candled tonight for the last time. All 12 of mine still seem to be growing and moving. If they all hatch I will be so happy. I did notice all but 3 of my eggs are labled with the colors. So maybe I will get a different color then buff and white. Really doesn't matter, I have no buff's and would love more whites. Now my husband says I have to pick 3 colors to raise and sell the other colors. How am I suppose to pick? I think he is crazy.

Well I thought I would go ahead and post a few pictures of my 2 white silkies that hatched on the 7th. Cute and Fuzzy, just as I hoped.
