Hi, all! Having trouble with a 1 1/2 year old columbian wyandotte, Grace. She's a very special bird who has been through a lot in her short life. Her newest malady showed up a couple weeks ago, when I noticed one eye was runny and irritated and looked like it had a white dot inside the eye, easily noticeable against the black pupil. I started a saline flush 2x daily and terramycin ointment once a day, assuming it was an infection. Since then, the eye looks less runny and irritated but the weird patch is growing and now looks like distinct worm-like streaks. Her activity level is perfectly normal and she is eating well, no notable changes in behavior or appetite. The eye is not very reactive to light and the pupil does not dilate or contract much at all. It's not on the surface of her eye and I'm not sure it's even an infection at this point- regardless the terramycin doesn't seem to be clearing it up so I'm not sure its even worth continuing. Google has not been helpful. Pictures are not easy to get but I have a few that might help ID the problem. In person the streaks are well defined, but it's hard to make that show up in the pics. Any suggestions, thoughts or ideas?

I am not an expert but she may have had an infection that has led to blindness or a cataract. There is a disease called eyeworm where in tropical areas, a worm can infect the eye. It is rare, and there is a lot of misinformation online about it. You can see 1/8 inch long worms in the eye, and the chicken will scratch at it's eye, possibly blinding itself. I would think it would affect both eyes, not just one, and it is most likely not that. A vet could prescribe a good antibiotic eyedrop that treats more bacteria than Terramycin will, but the damage may already be done. Ciprofloxacin eyedrops are available from FirstStateVetSupply online, and those are a wide spectrum antibiotic.
