Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, I guess the guy gets a bath tomorrow whether he likes it or not. I'm sure my cats are going to be amused and wonder if they are next.

Also, if I do find mites, and I hope I don't ::: crosses her fingers :::: what would you all suggest as a treatment? I just got these birds, I tried searching but I got every thread on the board that mentioned mites and not a lot of suggestions I understood as to how to deal with them.

I used to have a few chickens and a turkey who developed the same looking problem- it ended up being a yeast infection which started on the vent then moved into the skin around it. It was really stinky and the skin was very raw underneath after cleaning the crust off (it was more yellow than white though). We did a long anti-fungal treatment on each of them and it did the trick.

Ok, update, I checked last night for mites/lice after they had gone to bed and I didn't see anything moving. Is it possible that the feather loss around the tail feathers is just from picking? It doesn't seem to be affecting everyone, just about half the population?

And I got the "pasty one" as I have started to refer to him/her as bathed, I didn't see anything that looked like eggs around the vent, just the white goop that was pasted on. Some of it came off, some of it didn't but it looks like the emerging feathers should be able to come in now. (i hope)

I tried to remove the gunk but she/he started getting agitated being in the water so I had to stop satisfied with having removed most of it. I also noticed when I went to take pictures after that even though I had cleaned the vent, that there was new white stuff oozing out of the venthole, perhaps this was the stuff that was causing the pasty butt to begin with? He had used the bathroom in the cat carrier I am using to house him in for now.

You might not want to do this....but, maybe another bath today is in order.

It may be, as thebirdgirl suggested, a yeast infection if the white is still oozing out. That sounds painful. Maybe you can get your hen on a dose of anti-fungal treatment. Does it have a bad odor???

hit the pharmacy and buy a store brand antifungal.....usually not more than 7 bucks....Comes in a cream or a spray (athletes foot spray)
