White stuff, can you help me identify it? :::gross pics, sorry:::

I don't believe a yeast infection can go away on its own. At least it doesn't in a human. I was thinking more of an internal medicine also.

Even though she doesn't like being handled it is for her own good. She will thank you when the infection is cleared up! If that is in fact what it is. (Which I can't imagine what else white oozing would be.)

Ok, here is what the stuff around the base of the feathers looks like, its crusty and will come off but she/he doesn't like it very much when I try to get it off.... was considering letting him/her soak for a half hour or so in some warm water and then trying... does anyone know if I have to worry about him drowning or otherwise being ill affected by a soak?

To me that looks like she's gots lots of new pin feathers coming out there, which is good, and with that many coming in, looks like she is finishing up a moult. However, are you sure you don't see any lice? They are skin/straw colored, often yellow, and oblong. They move fast but do hold tight to feather shafts. You have to lift up feathers and look fast. It almost looks like the yellow stuff might be egg casings. But, if you say you don't see creepy crawlies, and she's the only one with the issue, I can be wrong. Often hard to tell from a picture. So it could very well be a yeast infection of the skin.

If you do have lice or mites, you can get a poultry dust from the feed store. Seven dust or general purpose poultry dust will do the trick. Fluff them up with the powder, and repeat in a week for a few weeks and it should take care of it all IF they have that.

Are you sure they are 16-18 weeks old? If I am seeing a moult there... don't remember my point of lay birds doing that kind of molting at point of lay. Adult feathers coming in and replacing teen feathers is usually more subtile, although not always true. The way it looks... it almost looks like what my 2nd year hens look like when they go though a heavy moult and lose lots of feathers at the same time. Of course, I am only seeing a tiny portion of the bird, and it's just one bird.

Could you post a full body shot of your flock even if they look bad? I'm beginning to wonder if these may be older than you thought.

I could understand why she would be irritated and not want to be picked up if she has a yeast infection. Those suckers arent comfortable. Before a surgery once i was given IV antibiotics and later developed "Thrush". Basically I had a yeast infection in my mouth. I didnt want to eat ANYTHING, it was miserable. So take care of that sucker as soon as possible so she can feel better!!

Hmmm your post about the chicken age has me wondering but he/she is really pretty small (I think). And I did see a bunch of tiny chicks that these are supposed to have grown from a couple of months ago... I would have to call the guy to find out a closer birth date, my chickens came from at least two different batches as some are more obviously more mature than the others, there are a few I think are Roos that are starting to strut and show up each other, although no one has crowed yet in my hearing and no one has laid.

Several of the birds have bare spots around the base of their tail feathers that are just starting to come back in now that they have more space. I am also feeding some birdseed that is heavy on the sunflowers and cat food to encourage feathering and hopefully discourage any more picking... :::sigh:::

But here is my flock, you can see about half the individuals here in this pic the other ones take off when I come a callin.

they look pretty young just by their combs. I might throw a dust bath of sand and Food Grade DE in there just in case those are mites. can't hurt.

Oh yeah, those girls look to be the right age. The combs are still small, and they are girls. Any reddening from that bunch means they are getting close to laying you eggs! If you had a rooster, you'd know by now. Some strutting and chest bumping is normal for boys and girls to make a pecking order. They look to be all young pullets so you are good to go. They actually don't look bad for having a picking issue either. I imagined MUCH worse for having a picking problem.

Your one girl probably has a yeast infection as per the other posters. I can't help with that really, as I've never had to deal with it so could not recognize it if I saw it.

Best of luck!

Believe it or not they looked a lot worse a week and a half ago when I got them. Do feathers grow back that fast? several of them still have bald spots around their tail feathers but now they are covered by the other feathers on their bodies. Also, looking at the pic, I can see that the worst affected birds are out of the frame...lol. Here is a closer pic of the bird's head that has the white stuff issue. He is the smallest of what I think are males. I am still not very sure.

He is still rather damp and unhappy with me in this pic, obviously.
