My name is John TENNER
I live in Devon ENGLAND
I am a breeder of 18yesars very high quality White wyandottes having won the WHITE WYANDOTTE UK CLUB SHOW several times
iN 2002 I WAS FORTUNATE TO WIN THE UN NATIONAL pOULTRY CLUB SHOE BEST OUT OF 7000 BIRDS

I hAVE MAINTAINED WITHOUT AN OUT CROSS A WINNING STRAIN FROM A VER FAMOUS FANCIER THROUGH THE FORTIES TO THE 70,S CaLLED JOHN NEWSOME

I HAVE READ SOME INFORMATION ON DIFFICULTIES WITH ROSE COMB FERTILITY .
hOWEVER MY FIRST REQUEST IS I ALOOKING FOR AN ANSWER TO A SPECIFIC PROBLEM.
i am seeing a 20% single comb in my hatching .mY QUESTION IS WILL I SEE A GREATER NUMBER OF SINGLE COMBS IF I USE A SINGLE COMB COCKEREL TO A ROSE COMBED PULLET

WOULD BE VERY GRATEDFULL ID THERE IS SOME ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THIS GENETIC PROBLEM

Hi John, let's give this a bash...

Pure rose comb is designated RR/pp, with single combs being rr/pp. Genotype Rr/pp will have phenotype rosecomb.

If you are wanting to eliminate single combs from your dottes, then I would avoid using a single comb (as either reproductor), as you will introduce more of the Rr/pp genotype into your gene pool - whihc, in turn would lead to more single combs popping up in the future.

Apparantly it is very difficult to eliminate single combs in dottes because of this one recessive "r"

John,

If you cross a purebred rose comb ( only has rose comb genes) to a single comb all of the offspring will have rose combs. The rose comb offspring can produce single comb offspring if crossed with a hybrid bird. A hybrid bird carries a gene for single comb and a gene for rose comb. The rose comb gene is dominant over the recessive single comb gene. It takes two single comb genes in a bird to cause a bird to have a single comb.

If your cross a hybrid rose comb with a single comb then half of the offspring will have single combs and half will have rose combs. The rose comb offspring will be hybrids.

You can test your birds to see if they are hybrid or purebred. If you cross a rose comb bird with a single comb bird and none of the offspring ( 10 or more) have single combs- the bird is purebred.

If the cross produces single comb and rose comb offspring the bird being tested is hybrid.

Tim
