Any chick showing red on the comb at six weeks is a cockerel.

This is not necessarily true.

Omelet, a Light Brahma, and Picatta, a Silver-Laced Wyandote, were both confidently declared male by that standard this summer.

Now, at point of lay as they pass through their final juvenile molt, they are both definitely pullets.
