The first photo is of a hatch from Gertrude (Gertie), a female Rouen, and Mr. Misty & Nick, black and blue magpies. From that hatch we kept 2 drakes, Blondy and Chompy, and a female we names after her sire, Nicole.
Third photo is of my favorite, Daffodil, a black crested and the brood she shared with another duck.
Fourth is a picture of the mother of the ducklings in the first 2 photos, Gertrude. I have no idea why she opted to nest in the open, she had no less than 6 other nesting options. However, she successfully hatched out every single egg in her clutch...only to abandon all of them.
Last photo is of my 2 drakes, Mr. Misty and Nick. On the other side of the fence is Daffodil, and Bertha (Bertie), sister of the other Rouen, with her hatch out from last June. None of Daffodils eggs hatched, most likely because of the crested genes, but it didnt stop her from taking eggs from others to brood over. For some reason Bertha joined her, sharing the nest and eggs, then the babies when hatched. Those four ducklings went to a friend. They ended up being 2 males and 2 females. Oddly enough for domestic ducks, the drakes are not sexaholics. I dont know if it is because they were 4 days younger than the females, that they were raised by two females for two months, or they are just well behaved gentlemen.
I have to say, if you are reading this and dont have ducks but are thinking about getting them, I highly recommend that you do. They are an endless source of entertainment, and the joy they have in just being alive is a pleasure to behold. Each of them have their own distinct personality and quirks. They recognize individual people and have their own distinct sound for each person. I cant recommend them enough.
