I want to get better at it. I know almost nothing about that sort of thing. I HAVE been learning a little bit about it since I joined BYC though.
Hey, practice makes perfect! It all about learning their distinguishing qualities, so it’s probably very similar to how you can tell birds apart. Breeds are pretty easy once you get the hang of it!
 
What gives them away? Coloring? Or like how tall they are? I’m terrible with birds that aren’t poultry.😅
Not too many large all-white birds in North America. The long, dagger-shaped bill and long legs point to a heron species. The bill is too straight for White Ibis (also the wrong color), and the proportions are wrong. This means it's an Egret. Bill is too long for a Cattle Egret. Bill is yellow which eliminates Snowy Egret. It's a Great Egret.
