Who cuts vegetables against their thumb?

Some of these questions are a hoot! I used to cut toward my thumb and it always scared by husband. Since I've become a massage therapist, I've had to quit, though, because of the 'slits' I would get in my thumb which made my thumb rough.

I'm clumsy with knives anyway so I try very hard to remember what my Home Economics teacher used to tell us about knife safety. She would stress "your knife always stays on the cutting board"..... looking back that woman must have had nerves of steal. I can't imagine having a room full of air headed teenage girls and giving them all a knife.

i do it all the time at work i havent cut myself yet *knocks on wood* but i did cut myseld wehn i was cuttin up some tenderloin i dont know how but i did

I always cut away from myself. It just doesn't compute for me that bringing a sharp knife edge towards myself could ever end up good. One time my sister was putting the dishes away and she said something smart to my mom so my ever brilliant mother decided to backhand her in the mouth without looking. Sis literally was drying a knife at the time and my mom got it just below the wrist. Thankfully my sister wasn't injured.

This is the correct way so you don't get cut....takes a bit of practice. The knife blade is never lifted high enough to cut your knuckle and the knuckle actually guides you to make even cuts.

After years of cooking in a commercial setting, the ONLY time I ever got cut was when a knife left on the counter and was then covered by a dish rag....I was going to get something out of the oven, so I grabbed up the towel, the knife point was stuck in the towel and then fell out and was heavy enough to hit my open palm and slice it open from base of fingers to wrist ....several stitches later

I grew up doing it without any problems. Gotta be careful though, when the knives get dull they make the job much harder and that's when accidents happen. My dad always kept the knives sharp as a new razor! Mine aren't that perfect so now I often use a board. :-(

Some things can't be cut on a cutting board....pitting strawberries, hand peeling potatoes, trimming stems on okra for pickling, for example. Everything else I use a peeler or a sharp knife on a cutting board.

There's a lot of control and self preservation when peeling toward your body. All my cuts are when going too fast peeling away from self or chopping on a board.
