My six chickens all want to lay in one nest box. If it's occupied then they start crackling very loud, roam around in and out waiting for the last hen to get off.

Does anyone know why they all have to have the same box? We have four to choose from.

Thank you group.

Picture this, there is 7 night clubs in town with only about 7 people wanting to go club-ing that night---they each ride by each club and do not stop at the ones that have no one there----end up all 7 at one night club----kinda what chickens do---feel happier with a crowd. My Guess?

LOL I like the night club analogy!

I also heard they feel safer laying where other hens have laid.

Putting fake eggs in the other boxes might help with that

It's instinctual. The fact one hen safely layed there puts the "seal of approval" on that nest....you can "bait" other best buy keeping wooden eggs, golf balls, etc in them.

I haven't had chickens long, and I only have two, but I've already figured out that chickens invented peer pressure. They're the ultimate teenage girls, in little feather outfits! Seriously, for ditzy, highly strung, peer-led behaviour, they beat any teen or tween I've ever met.
