We found our first egg this morning but I have no idea who laid it! It was either my Red Star or my Australorp, both are nearing 23 weeks. It's extremely difficult to discern which bird laid it since they're both brown egg layers; I'm hoping maybe one of you seasoned chicken owners can tell the difference. Thanks!

Compared to a store bought egg on left, our egg is on the right. Big and strong for a first timer:

These are all red star eggs. I don't have any other type of hens. Yet.

What is a fresh water lobster?

Thank you! I'm pretty sure it was my Red Star; since she's a production gal I assumed she'd be first to lay, and my egg looks strikingly similar to yours

.

p.s. this is our lobster:

He's just like a crawfish except very blue!

That is so neat. I have never seen a crawfish. Thanks for the picture. It looks much smaller than a lobster here. Are they? I used to go lobstering and crabbing with my Father.

I've heard of putting food coloring on the vents of hens to see what color sticks to the eggs. Not sure of the exact technique. I guess the moisture in the vent are keeps the dye active. I would not use red, but blue, green or yellow should be OK.
