Who else had their chicks BEFORE they built their coop?

I had mine waaay before I had a coop. I kept them in a pvc hoop run covered with a tarp for 2 months before I had my coop ready. I had a huge rubbermaid horse trough turned on it's side with shavings in it for them to sleep in. I also had some low perches, but they prefered to pile up together in the shavings at night and used the perches during the day. As long as they are warm and protected from wind and predators they will be fine.

I have four in my brooder right now; 2- 5 week olds and 2- 6 weeks olds... The coop still needs the doors installed (human, chicken and egg collection), a roof, windows , caulking, paint, trim...

Oh, dear... When I actually go and list it, it's a bit scary... Good thing we were able to 'expand' the brooder a bit so they'd have some more room.

Gosh, I thought that's how it worked! We're getting our first chicks and figure we've got at least a month to build something for them outside. Sounds like that's how it goes for everyone!

You were right! That is how it works, at least for those of us who have never had chickens before and don't necessarily do things exactly the way everyone else does. For me it has been good to learn a bit about chicken behavior and about the way Mrs Delmar and I enjoy interacting with our birds. Our plans for the coop have evolved as we get to know them better. We have decided, for example that we want a coop that we can walk into. This was not the original design we were looking at.
