Who else has a spastic, hilarious chicken?

None of mine are completely nuts....all in their own little ways. My one hen, Tillie, will sprint out of the run as I open the door to bring them treats....then as I toss the treats down, instead of running through the door, she'll run to the equivalent spot on the outside of the run and try to get through the HC. As a leghorn, she's a much better flyer that the others (RSLs) and will fly across the yard to prove they can.

I have many crazy chickens, so I’ll list them all.

July: Young Buff Brahma pullet. not laying. Born April 30 2020.

She is really sweet, loves pecking EVERYTHING, loves poking her head in on things. Once, I was watching all the chickens leave the coop, and from the perch above the door, she poked her head vertically none to see outside. She then jumped on the back of one of our older production red hens named Pancake, and leaped our the door.

Pancake: 2 1/2 year old production red. Lays eggs rarely.
She pecks everything, is likely head hen, finds mirrors interesting, enjoys treats, a lot. HATES ROOSTERS!

Pumpkin: 2 1/2 year old production red. Lays about every other day.
Loves treats, considers snow a demon, really friendly, if we could understand chickens she’d likely be an optimist.

Delta: 2 1/2 year old production red.
Lays about 4-6 eggs a week.
She is bold, crazy, and determined.
She has escaped the fence several times, once when we first got her, I was walking home and what do you know! There’s a chicken in our front yard! A month later we found her perching in the window sill of our barn. She has recently decided to just run straight through our electric fence.

Extra!: Once found my Barnevelder out side of our run.2 other chickens where perched on the roof of our 7 ft tall run. All three now have clipped wings.

chickens like cat lasers.

I had little Oz. Oz was a light brahma hen, on the older side and she was one of three hens left behind at the place we bought. Meg the orphington was nothing special, and we had to put the other brahma down.

Oz was an absolute freak. She was anxious, didn't like the other chickens, didn't like me. They bullied her for a while, and then she changed...

She'd leave the coop at top speed, screaming at the top of her lungs. The other chickens would stand back, starting at her like they had no idea what was wrong with her.

She'd pace the fence, then bolt out as soon as I opened the run and spend her day wandering alone, chasing grasshoppers.

There was only one time she was friendly. The first time she molted, I made note of it in the morning but she was acting normal. Until it was time to go to bed. I went out to watch them file in and shut the doors, when Oz, squawking up a storm, bolted away from the coop and dove into my skirt.

She buried her head in my arm when I picked her up, and my heart broke. Do I did what any chicken crazy lady would do and let her stay inside until everyone was asleep.

Oz changed me. This spastic chicken that never let me touch her still went to me when she wanted safety and comfort. After that, I knew that just because they seemed scared of me doesn't mean a chicken doesn't know I will take care of them.

I lost her to old age, she never really let me touch her again, but I loved the little spazz.
RIP Oz! Sounds like she lived her best life! It’s always the aloof, unattached chickens that will surprise you the most. The spazz’ed out chickens is one of the best things about having them.

My leghorns are literally insane & like to prove themselves too! 😂

I needed that laugh! I had a movie going on in my head to picture everything you said.... I was NOT disappointed. Your Brahma has the same exact face of one of my brahma’s, Buffy. 🥰 Pancake has the facial expression of wishing somebody would try her, she dares them. They’re all so beautiful!

you’re right about that, chickens do love lasers.🤣 I need to find my laser pointer & try it on my 5 week old chicks.

My 16 week old Easter Egger named Maggie is literally “that friend” of her flock. She’s not the top girl, but she’s not the bottom either. Out of my whole flock of 13, she’s probably the most entertaining one of them all. Even when she was younger she was that same way. Before they stayed outside, we would take them to the run that we built to let them peck & scratch. When it started getting into the evening time right before the sun starts setting, Maggie would squawk her head off until we brought them back inside. You couldn’t even have a conversation because of how loud & constant she was. Trying to take a picture of certain chooks? Maggie photobombs it by walking, or usually running, through. Hear a squawk? There goes Maggie, darting & weaving through her flock mates. Trying to feed berries to everyone? Maggie comes & snatches the berry then swallows it whole. She’s usually the first one to run up to us at the run if we or the cats & dogs are doing anything around it. Just staring & investigating. Her flock mates get after her a lot of the time especially during treats. I always make sure to give her a little extra, just because she’s so sweet & I love her. She literally acts like the world is about to end the way she runs around, always in a hurry. That’s just Maggie & I wouldn’t want her any other way.

Well that gave me a nice smile for the day! Maggie sounds adorable 😊
