Who else has experienced a terrible ratio with a straightrun . . . .

I got from sandhill 6 black Orpingtons looks like I have 5 pullets and 1 rooThe others I got I have no clue since I just got the Assorted Chickens to finish out my Orpinton order and I sold them.

mm I have only ordered chicks once 3 years ago and got this for straight run!
3/4 LF cochin roos
2/5 WC black polish

now with my hatching about 75% roos-for 4 years in a row!

I've often wondered why anyone would order straight run and there seems to be quite a few folks on here that do. I've read that it's because they don't want to contribute to the deaths of unwanted roo chicks...but then, what do you do with the extra roos that you get? Rehome? Process? I can't imagine that all those roos received in a straight run order are all surviving to live a long and full life out there, so, if they are going to meet their demise anyway, why not just order sexed chicks in the first place?

Sure would take all the guess work and drama out of the process. I've never received anything but what I ordered and didn't have to worry about mystery breeds or gender.

I just got a straight run from a local breeder because she doesn't know how to sex. and I didn't mind because I figured out of 24 I hoped to get around 10 hens and then the remaining roosters would go to freezer camp . . . . looks like my freezer will be full this year! I did end up purchasing some eggs to hatch myself and had another 24 chicks so I hope I end up with more hens there!

Glad to know I'm not the only one!

I had a bad ratio this year also:

Total of 9 roos & 4 hens (3 of which I hatched myself & all of those were roos).
