So I got 24 chicks on April 2nd and today went out and looked at everyone carefully and only have 6 hens out of the 24!! I got 24 chicks because I was hoping to end up with at least 10 hens

I did however incubate some other eggs and have 24 chicks out of that batch as well. Hoping my odds are a little better this time.

A LOT of friends I have talked to and their friends too, have all mentioned that there are ton more males then females this year.....last year it was the way around !

I put a dozen Trader Joe's fertile eggs under a broody. Due this weekend. I candled a couple days ago and found wiggles at a ratio of 6 out of 10. (Two broke from being stepped on). IF any hatch, it's anybody's guess as to how many might be pullets.

My last order from MM was mostly pullets but to get some certain breeds you must order straight run. 10 BBS Cochins-7 roos. 4 Frizzle bantams-3 roos. 4 BLRW-4 roos. 2 SPR-Both roos. Freebee of course a roo. Freezer is full. Note to self - Next year order only pullets!

I've heard a theory about this somewhere; that they sex pullets, obviously, and then the ones that they sex as cockerels get put in the "straight run" bin. On top of the actual straight - runs, of course.

I have heard the same thing. A friend told me that when he wants a certain number of hens and roos he spends the extra and orders sexed birds because he always gets mostly roos out of straight run.
