Who else is getting chicks tomorrow at TSC??

I did sand last year my self. I started with shaving, but I didn't like it long term. I brooded 33 chicks in a 55 gal aquarium. They loved it. As far as straining it, go to the reptile department in your pet store. They have a metal litter scoop made for sand there. Worked great! It was easier to clean for me. Gave the chicks a little exposure to the 'bug's they need immunity from, since I got it out of my sand arena. Not a single death or pasty or anything! The only trouble I had was in the first week. And that was with shavings. One seemed to have eaten some shavings and plugged up his crop. But, I got that fixed and he was good as new in 2 or 3 days.

Are the TSC chicks vaccinated for Merrics ?

Not sure about the scratching, my 6 were scratching too, and I put them in with my other 32 babies.
Hope they don't catch anything.
I couldn't imagine them having lice or mites at a couple of days old

Well, after hearing all the hype, I had to go by today. They only had assorted bantams, cornish rocks, and a few assorted pullets left. I didn't want real light colored birds, and it looked like leghorns were all that was left. They got picked over QUICK. The ducks sold out in a few hours. Gonna wait until the next shipment, unless someone close by has some australorp pullets to get rid of.

Welcome Welcome Welcome you will love all the friends you will make here! Delewares? That is great, our TSC gets chicks from Mt. Healthy Hatchery but don't see Delewares on the list.

I love baby chicks, so soft. I ONLY got 17 chicks. BUT, I will keep checking back, as they are getting 200 a week for 7 weeks this year.

You can easily fit a few chicks in a tote for a few weeks. They won't be ready for a coop for a couple of months. Sounds like you could load up to me with 5 acres!

OK well I TRIED to get some more....my TSC had NONE this morning...they said in a few weeks....however the feed store had some but I wasnt that excited. I guess I better just get the 16 of them in the brooder out in the coop first.

The ONLY real hard thing about raising backyard chickens is: Restraint, not buying 25 to 50 when you only need 10, or not hatching 32 eggs every three weeks, and buying more incubators in case the eggs pile up and need to hatch. Enjoy, you will have a great time. It's amazing how many of those tiny fuzzy butts will fit in that small box. In January, I brought home 52 chicks in a medium sized tote. A flock in a box.
