Who else is setting... I wanna see pics!

I candled my quail eggs last night.
9/15 of the buttons showed veining. 20/20 cortunix have veining!
I didn't take the "clear" button eggs out... I'll just mark them as clear. They're so small, I may have missed something.
I was really surprised that I could see anything at all in those button eggs. I could see a tiny embryo in the smallest egg (#10)
It was really amazing.
I'll try to get a pic next time I candle... I was going to take a pic last night, but my camera needs new batteries.

Please post pictures of the veining if you can....

I candle at 10 days to get rid of the clears but cannot tell anything else earlier. Later I may see movement but that is all.
I think maybe a real candler might work better then my little flashlight.

To candle the quail eggs, I used a small Mag-lite.
The candler was too large, so I cupped the flashlight with my hand & set the egg on the opening made by my fingers & thumb.
I'll get pics tonight. I just had to recharge the batteries.
I'll get some good pics of the button quail eggs & a couple of the chicken eggs as well. One of the smashed eggs (the green EE egg)actually has veining. It has a crack the entire way around the egg and two impact points and a detached air cell.
It seems as though only 10/20 of the chicken eggs are showing development, but it's too early to tell for sure. That would be pretty good considering they were roughly shipped & most have detached air cells. 2/5 cracked eggs are showing veining. The other cracked egg with veining is a MF d'uccle.
Both "duck" eggs show veining. One guinea egg & one pea egg have visible veining also.
One other pea egg shows what I believe to be a bloodring.

But if I get one live pea & one live guinea, I'll just put those two together.
To me, a bloodring is better than no development at all. At least I know these pea eggs were fertile!

Im only on day 5...set on aug 22nd...not going to candle yet...or at all if I can help it...hmmmm well maybe...no no, not going too....hmmm well maybe just a peek in a few days....

no no, Im gonna just let it happen:/....I hope....

Yeah, My pea eggs are on day 6, all others are on day 5.
The quail hatch in about 2 weeks, so I wanted to candle them to see how they were doing.
I was curious as to the development of the roughly shipped chicken eggs, so I candled them as well. I will not remove any eggs until day 10, but the ones with veining were pretty obvious.
I like to keep records to know when I might have lost any developing chicks, So I will candle a few times during incubation.
Since this is the first time setting in the cabinet incubator, I'm also interested in the damaged eggs with cracks & detached air cells (DAC.) I am surprised that 50% are showing veining - including 2 of the 5 cracked eggs.
I would like to determine the % of eggs that hatch with DAC while using the auto turner. The next time I receive some DAC eggs, I will incubate them without the turner and see if that makes a difference.
I am already pretty sure that the cabinet incubator vs. the LG has played a role in so many of them showing development.
So... I guess I'm candling to improve hatch rates. I definitely feel I'm learning something by recording candling info. I'm not just candling for something to do. (Although I have candled "for fun" before!)

I sometimes hatch eggs just to candle them and learn. After all practice and experience do add up. Good notes, marking the eggs, recording end result of "odd" eggs, has helped a lot.

And since those eggs were just FOR candling, I don't worry about over handling stress on those eggs. But I don't have poorer results from those hatches in general.

But I can begin to sort backwards chicks quite a while before actual hatch and definitely know when development is not normal in an egg and when to expect hatching trouble of some sort.

Now I mark those differently and at hatch I'm watching for problems. Water chicks, backwards chicks and late chicks have all come from eggs marked for problems.

A few times now I've even managed to mark where I think the little spud will pip through if it's backwards and been very close.

So there is benefit to concentrated practice. Good for you.

OKies I ended up putting 12 eggs in the bator.

The potential baby daddies are

"April" the stud muffin white showgirl or my black copper maran "Tank"

The eggs are from my cuckoo maran (3)
Stubby the blue frizzle cochin who is like 1/4 silkie (6)

and Sunny the splash cochin (3)

I'm actually hoping to get another bird like I sold a couple weeks ago. Silkie feathered and a silvery color (not even remotely blue). The lady who bought him called and he had been attacked by his hatchmates and scalped. I went to look at him yesterday and he is sooooooo beautiful even with a big hole in his head and his eyes swollen shut. Now I'm mad at myself for selling - even if he was a roo.

You've got some... um... interesting combinations giong on there!
I definitely wanna see pics of those chicks!

Stubby is the favorite of both roosters - She is totally naked and looks ready to roast. I have tried seperating her but she tries to kill herself. I have also tried two different kinds of aprons on her and she can get them both off, will run around screaming bloody murder and rolling until they come off.

I think any babies from her would be fathered by April - as when Tank gets a hold of her he more or less just sits on her (gently) I don't think their ummm *parts* match up close enough

Same goes for Sunny.

The cuckoo avoids April and is mostly seen with Tank - or outside the fence in the neighbors yard by herself. She is very much a loner.
