Who else is setting... I wanna see pics!

Ok here is a picture of Stubby today. She unfortunately broke the camera and I still have to get pics of the chicks. All have hatched that I think are going to. Need to get them set up in a brooder now. The last maran was a girl. The boy is HUGE.

I am charging the battery on the camera now - will add chick pics in a little bit.

The 2 cuckoo X BCM marans: One girl, one boy. The girl still has some membrane stuck to one shoulder. She was trapped in her shell.

Oh and here is Sunny:

OMG... Stubby is a little... um... well... uh... homely. Yeah, that's it, homely. She doesn't seem to think appearances are too important. It's what's inside that counts, you know. Let's just say that I'm sure she is very pretty on the inside.

Have you ever thought about outfitting her with a saddle? I have 2 ladies that have saddles on right now.
In the spring, we'll have to get an egg swap going. I'd love a couple of Stubby's chicks! I could trade silkies, BRs, or mutts.
Showgirls/naked necks are the one chicken that DH really doesn't want to have here, but those chicks are really, really cute!
And Stubby... if she had tail feathers, I bet she'd be pretty. She's got a pretty color, anyways.

Yeah, we need to arrange a spring egg swap. All of you who hatched with me... well, the ones who posted cute chicks... I'd love to trade eggs in the spring. Let me know what you think of the idea.

I have tried two different types of saddles with her. She is a houdini chicken and gets them off. They entirely freak her out. I said "Little Hen - have you looked in the mirror lately?" She just shrugged her ragged shoulders at me and settled into her favorite nesting corner.

I would be willing to swap eggs this spring. It might be fun. My eggs are always full of surprises. Here is one that is 5 weeks old - note the black toupe:

Sorry for the highjack... has anybody ever put little chicks under a broody hen? When is the best time? Night before bed or early morning? The chicks are ready tonight and the hen is broody so just wondering before it gets too late.
Thanks.

I have placed them under them late at night. So far that has worked for us. Not sure if it is because the scent was on the chicks by morning so all was good or what. The last batch we gave to her at like 6 in the evening and she took all 13, but then the next day kicked the 5 biggest to the curb. Good thing since they are bigger than her at 5 weeks old now.

See... I look at it this way:
If I participate in an egg swap, I'm technically not buying eggs, right? And... (it gets better) if I tell my husband that I will be sending eggs away... that distracts him from the fact that I'll be on the receiving end as well.
Shelley... you around here somewhere? I noticed you were in on the current forum-wide egg swap. How's that going?
Still no guinea. I'm just waiting patiently.

I don't have any info to add regarding the "broody tricking" scheme. I think I'd try it at night & just try to be there in the am when she wakes up to make sure all goes well. I have no experience on that, though. Good Luck.

Well I'm now glad I hatched these chicks. I went and candled the eggs the two broodies were sitting on and all of them have gone bad. I will sneak the chicks under them tonight - 7 is a good number for the two of them. Time to get the broody mom cage out again. All the moms like this cage and will want to fight over who gets to sleep in it. Silly chickens - its just an old rabbit cage. I just think it makes them feel safe, but still included in the goings on in the coop.
